If the 18-70mm lens is a DX lens the image circle will be too small to fully cover the 35mm film frame. A Nikon DX sensor measures 23.6mm x 15.8mm and the 35mm film frame measures 24mm x 36mm.

You can, however, use a Nikon DX lens on their D3, D3x and D700 full frame (same saize as the 35mm film frame) FX sensor cameras and the cameras will "crop" the smaller image circle of the DX lens so you'll get an image the size of the DX sensor.
