Can you give me any suggestions and pointers for taking picture at a prom/dance?
It's my first official job for my high school yearbook, and I'm not experienced taking pictures of events like this. I'm used to take pictures of nature. http://www.flickr.com/photos/caoran9238
So any suggestions for the prom? I know it's going to be dark.
I have a Canon XSi with 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 IS lens. I am also going to borrow a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L from school as well as another Canon XS. I have a manual Flash from Promaster. And maybe I'm going to buy a monopod.
Please, any suggestions that work with the equipment I have. Also if you have any high school prom pics, I would love to see it.
Thank you very much.
A fast normal lens is going to serve you better than any f2.8 zoom. Consider the Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM. f1.4 is two stops faster than 2.8, or about 4 times faster. This is critical in low-light situation where need fast shutter speeds to reduce/avoid blur. Image quality is also superb.
